Diversity in Water Speaker Series: Tya Darden

Date / Time: Thursday, May 9, 2024 from 5:30 – 6:30PM, ET

Tya Chenelle Darden is the manager of the Compliance Assurance Section (CAS) at the Ohio EPA in the Division of Drinking and Ground Waters (DDAGW). She manages a staff of 14. The CAS group is responsible for preparing all enforcement actions for the division, ensuring that all division rules are reviewed and updated, maintaining chemical compliance programs across the state, etc. Tya started at Ohio EPA in 2007 as an environmental specialist where she inspected drinking water treatment plants, reviewed engineer detail plans for new wells, waterline extensions, water storage tanks, and small water treatment facilities. In general, Tya assisted public water systems to comply with agency regulations and help provide adequate safe drinking water to residents. She has always been enthusiastic about drinking water and all things related to the environment including recycling. Tya is passionate about giving back to her community, especially to empower young women and girls to reach their goals. She believes that representation is important, and therefore has volunteered her time to speak at many schools and organizations including Women in Science, Dayton and Columbus water festivals, high school and college career fairs, science fairs, graduations, etc. Prior to the agency, Tya worked at Valero Energy Corporation as an environmental engineer. Tya earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering and an MBA from the University of Dayton in Dayton, Ohio. She graduated from Meadowdale High School as salutatorian of her class. In her spare time, she enjoys traveling, nature walks, reading memoirs, dance fitness, spending time with her humongous family and fostering young kids.
